What's Your Definition Of "It"

I've been home sick for the last few days, which gave me a lot of time to think about... uhh... errr... every-freakin-thing imaginable! Don't get me wrong, I like a lazy day on the couch as much as the next person, but three days ~ H.E.L.P!

I couldn't help but think about how much waffling I've been doing lately. I think I've gotten a little complacent, making me relax, resulting in ... NOTHING! I hate that word. "Nothing" bothers me more than "negative somethings." Nothing means I'm not accomplishing anything, which means I'm wasting, resulting in... yep ~ Nothing! So I got to some more thinking about what to do about this nothing I've been doing so well.

Answer: IT!

What's this "It" thing, and why is this our answer? It's anything and everything we want It to be at the time we want It to be. It will make Nothing disappear... all we have to do is make a choice, live by that choice, and make It happen. Decide to do It right now, no hesitations, no excuses. Commit and execute It like never before. Make It our top priority, even if It means we get laughed at, scrutinized, or told It's impossible. It doesn't have to make the Earth stop spinning... It just has to make us feel as if we're accomplishing, helping, or giving.

It makes us do~ will never allow us to sit. What is It again? It's that thing we've been wanting to do since we were kids, but have always put off for the "perfect time." "It's never been the right time."  It could be the business we've always wanted to start, but were to afraid due to the potential failure. It could simply be to tell our husband, wife and kids that we love them more often.

What's your definition of It?

Is It the weight you've always wanted to lose, but have been reluctant because of the lifestyle change that would take place? To those reading, who've already taken on this personal challenge: I commend and respect you more than words will ever say. You're a true inspiration! To those reading, wishing this could be you: Do It. Do It now! Why not? Don't let Nothing take control... kick it in it's negative arse!

For me, It's always about branching out... creating more, helping more, learning more. Unfortunately It met Nothing for a brief time, which made It hang back for awhile. Thank goodness I got sick, allowing me to see It was waiting for me to get rid of this damn Nothing.

A few years ago It was shaving my hair down to a stubble, because since I was a kid, I'd been in a fist fight with Self-Conscious. My hair was thick and wavy, which gave those cruel boys and girls something to make fun of. As I grew older, I found myself spending more time in the bathroom than any girl I ever knew ~ this had to stop... I had to stop caring what others thought, and It needed to happen now! When It was finished with that electric razor, I had never felt more free! It took almost 28 years, but It finally beat the crap out of Self-Conscious!

When we look back, will we say we did more of It?

  1. Nice post. I am always thinking about things like this... Another word which I think is interesting is "me" because it completely transforms based on whoever is speaking it.

  3. Many people operate from a "When I.. then I..." frame of mind so they won't do IT until some other IT happens. So yeah, just DO it.

    Nice post!

  7. Dayne: This is weird. Check out my post from yesterday (and today) - it is about IT, too!!!
IT is really funny, isn't IT?

    Hope you feel better soon.

  8. I "Lost" It one day and wrote out the frustrations of the loss. Then a Wise Man came to my blog and wrote:

"IT will come, and when IT does come, you'll be amazed at the beauty, harmony, selflessness, and pure truth! When we stop looking, expecting, worrying, hoping, NEEDING IT... IT shows it's face - not the face with the mask on IT, like we've all experienced... a gorgeous, smiling, love filled face! You WILL find IT... actually no! IT will find you!"

Thanks Dayne, for the reminder to keep fighting for IT...

  9. I love this post :)
It's amazing the thoughts we have and the ideas we come up with when we have nothing specific crowding or pre-occupying our minds.
Your absolutely right, "It" can be anything we want t to be. With that said, I think I will take one of your lazy (I doubt I will get sick so lazy is my excuse)days and use it just to reflect. Reflect on "It" - whatever IT is. Hopefully, in the process I will gain as much insight as to dedicate a whole blog post to IT.

    Thanks

  10. Great post! Of course, I kept thinking of "It's It" ice cream bars that I ate as a child, but I definitely don't need more of those ... I will have to think about what IT is right now!

  11. Certainly got me thinking about this one! I always seem to be "busy doing nothing", but not actually doing anything!
    Great post, as usual, Dayne!

  12. Thanks for all the kind words you guys/gals. It is so huge, isn't it... and can really make us think. Sometimes It makes us realize how much of It we need ~ sometimes we realize how much of It we already have (BoB). After reading Bob's story, I think he definitely realized how much he'll never take It for granted, yeah?

Thank you all sooo much for taking the time to come over and write such thoughtful responses.

  13. I have a lot of "ITS" in my life.

You post has definitely inspired me to look at them and start doing something rather then Nothing.

  14. Dayne, As always a thought-provoking post. Goes with my fave motto from Nike:
    "Just Do it"!!!

...yes, it's liberating to cut ones hair, but I haven't been able to cut mine short since the 8th grade, however, I did just colour it Brunette! It was totally unplanned and totally liberating!

    Happy weekend, Dane~

  15. Wow -- shaving your head really was a big step!!! I'm not sure what my "it" is but I have thought about it. I think it's important to have an "it," a goal to work towards, something to motivate us. Great post!

  19. Buddhism would have you "do" the exact opposite: Don't just do something: sit there!!

    Mary Oliver says:

    ". . . I don't know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down

into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day.

Tell me, what else should I have done?

Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?

Tell me, what is it you plan to do

with your one wild and precious life?"

  20. Dayne,

Hope you don't mind my playing off of your words. But, I do think you might find this interesting.

    "Nothing" is No-thing
Your concerns about producing nothing are real. However, the nothing that you produced is not?
    or is it?
In fact truly doing nothing is something that most people do not know how to do. Actually, doing nothing is the very goal that the Dharma has taught me to reach for. Doing nothing is the act of not doing or acting. It is a primer for a relaxed and insightful mind. It is also the path of enlightenment and the goal of enlightenment. However, the most important thing that nothing has taught me is that nothing is the only thing that stays the same. It is pure and free from ever being tarnished or changed. Have you indeed felt that purity? Or was the nothing you felt just a very insignificant "something"?

Nothing is a state of no-action, no-thought, no-intention, no-perspective. Nothing to me means total obliteration of personal EGO. It is when nothing can hold me down, from attaining the broadest view of everything. I see this though by seeing nothing at all.

I hope to but have yet to reach a state of total nothing. Perspective can be a funny thing indeed.
